STILLWATER, Okla. On Friday, November 12, during the historic 100th Annual Meeting of the Oklahoma Bar Association, Mr. Michael Fox and Dr. Steve Trost were presented the 2004 Innovator of the Year award. The award, sponsored by the associations Intellectual Property Law Section, has been given annually since 1976 to an Oklahoma inventor whose innovation has had a significant impact on the state of Oklahoma. The Fox/Trost duo was nominated for this prestigious award by their patent attorney, Marc Brockhaus, in recognition of their development of the intelliRock concrete strength and quality control system.
As co-inventors of the intelliRock system, Fox and Trost introduced their product to the construction industry in 2002. The intelliRock system consists of sensors that can be embedded in concrete to measure, calculate, and record the concretes maturity in real-time. Handheld readers are then used to view and download the data from the sensors. The sensors effectively predict in-place concrete strength, thus providing assurance that the construction can safely advance to the next stage, ultimately accelerating the construction schedule.
Words cannot express the excitement and fulfillment associated with seeing one of your ideas take root and bring about real change, especially in an industry thats as old as civilization itself, said Trost. The inertia within the construction industry is unbelievable. As such, the success of intelliRock should be a constant source of encouragement to every average Joe with a new idea. If you truly believe your idea can change the world, find a partner who shares your vision, then press forward until you succeed! Mike and I consider ourselves blessed to have been able to work together on this endeavor and we are truly honored to receive this award.
Since its introduction, intelliRock has become the most widely used sensor technology for determining real-time concrete strength within the construction industry. On projects across the country, intelliRock has helped engineers and builders accelerate workflow, reduce overall construction time, cut costs, and improve safety. The intelliRock System has been used on hundreds of construction sites nationwide, including the 3-mile Washington D.C. Metro extension, the $52 million University of Oklahoma Memorial Stadium expansion, and the five-year, $261 million Dallas High-Five Interchange. The intelliRock system was a key factor in helping accelerate the reconstruction of the Interstate 40 bridge near Webbers Falls, Oklahoma after it was struck by a barge in May 2002. Use of the intelliRock system allowed the contractor to complete the project in just 47 days, earning a 1.5 million dollar bonus for early completion.
In addition to this coveted Innovator of the Year award presented by the Oklahoma Bar Association, Fox and Trosts intelliRock system has been highly recognized in the construction industry as the recipient of such awards as the 2004 NOVA Award given by the Construction Innovation Forum, the Oklahoma Journal Record 2004 Innovator of the Year award, and the 2003 Top Rollout award by Better Roads magazine. intelliRock was also named Most Innovative Product by attendees at the World of Concrete in 2003.
